Can anybody ID this M43 hat?

I purchased this hat many years ago and at the time assumed it was BW Gebirgsjäger. However, it is fairly dark (the flash in my pictures makes them look lighter) and lack BW crossed swords. Also, the two buttons on the front are quite different than those found on earlier M43 caps.

It is made of a very fine wool, not polyester or cotton.

    Thanks!

    Steve

Manufactured in 1994, standard colour so far. Is the Edelweiß attached?

Frank, no there will be no Edelweiss... depending on the darker color, the missing swords and the strange NVA like buttons I´m 100% sure this is a hat for civil personnel of the BW, the "Zivile Wache" ... the same hat went over to canada not long ago combined with a whole uniform for such a guy...

        Can anyone compare the NSN?

Civilian Guards? The guys here are wearing not this kind of caps.

Today most of the "classic" civilian guards which were employed by the state are disbanded and replaced be employees of private companies due to cost reasons... which will now wear a kind of civil security dress which may be different ...

            Thanks guys!

My leading guess until today was THW, but that was just a wild guess. Civilian guards... never thought of that one! I'm now curious to know what their uniform looks like. Jens, do you have pictures of the uniform you sent or should I ask a certain Canadian for some pics? Anybody have any pics of actual use?

The only item I thought I had of the civilian guard is the long winter parka with slash hand pockets. It was made from the late 1950s until at least the 1970s (probably later). Now I wonder what the older civilian guard uniforms looked like!

The NSN 8405-12-165-5057 = MUETZE, DIENST-, ZI which to me means Civilian Service Hat.

                  Steve, here we go ...

In the first picture you`ll find "the hat" with matching the dress tunic, in the second one a grey moleskin working dress...:

                    Jens,

Thanks for posting the photos of the uniform that you sent to me.

                    Gentlemen,

There is a grey shirt in a box downstairs that I beleive goes with this tunic. I can not get to this box at the moment. The problem with my right leg continues to exist. As well as the parka that Steve mentioned that goes with this uniform there is also a mantle but in a much darker grey plus other pieces of the uniform. The buttons on the hat are identical in design to those on the tunic and mantle. They are metal with horizonatl lines and a faint bluish/greyish tinge to them. I'll post a thread on the whole series of of these uniforms once I can move around again.

                    Regards,

                    Gordon

Thanks all for the information! Yes, the buttons on my hat are identical to the tunic Jens posted. And the other information, such as the abbreviation, all confirm its identity! Now I have to find a new home for this because I'm not interested in non BW, BGS, or Polizei items. Or more specifically, I am no longer interested in collecting anything BRD other than these things. I have to draw the line somewhere

Gordon, sorry to hear about the dinged up leg. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Gents - Very interesting thread. I was previously oblivious to the existence of this style of uniform.

                        All the best - TJ
