    MArine Cap Tallies

    Hi folks,
does somebody knows the difference between small and large letters on Cap tallies. I detected 15 and 16 mm in height what also results in a wider writing.

    Nico,

Interesting question. I have not come across this before. I understand there is a cap band book in the works and perhaps we will have to wait until it is published to answer that question.

    Regards,

    Gordon

There were different producers between 1955 and 1980, most orders for the navy got Neiss in Krefeld but, for example, Bender in Weissenburg, also produced for the navy.

          Gentlemen,

There were differences between the script used between 1955 and 1959 but it was in the type of script characters used. Not the size of the characters. Early type was Sutterlin script while later types used Latin script.
Interesting comment on the names of the companies that made the cap bands. New information to me and very welcome.

          Regards,

          Gordon

Neiss worked until 1995 and then All the Stuff went to several Museums, incl. the Machines to an Industrial Museum. Bender still works but doesn't sell to private customers, only Wholesale and for nice Prices. A Cap tally is 12.50 I think to remember and had to be bought in quantities of 10.

Gents - I am afraid that I don't have much information available to answer Nico's query, but thought this comparison shot may be of some use.

              All the best - TJ

Contacted a Collector about the question and wait for an Answer now.
After this I'll put them on my wesite. I think I have some hundred, but don't know how many different, maybe 100 or so.

                    TJ,

Interesting cap bands. There definitely appears to be two different sizes of latin script on your bands. It would be interesting to know if there was a change of the size of the script or if the difference is due to the different copmanies who manufactured them as was mentioned earlier. Hopefully, Nico's contact will be able to help.

                    Regards,

                    Gordon

                      Gordon,
just got the message that this must be production differences for several Makers. Nothing to detect a Period.

Thanks for the info. That is what I suspected.
