    Early Bundeswehr Flight Suit 1959

Hi there. I could buy a very early Bundeswehr leather flight suit (maker "Striwa", 1959) in mint condition for €250,00. Is that an adequate price for it? Unfortunately I don't have pictures at the moment.

    Regards, Matthias

Pictures would be great especially from the labels. Never heard about one only cotton with Leather Jacket. If such Item exists I would say it's rare and 250 might not to much for it.

...if you look through the "Bundeswehr lovers" thread you`ll find pictures of another early grey leather overall... while jet pilotes for shure wore a cotton overall plus leather jacket this suit was made for personell of bigger turboprop driven aircrafts and heli crews.

      Regards,

      Jens

P.S. Another - younger (1970 ??) - example of this dress hangs downstairs ... parhaps I can take some pictures the next days...? Oh yes ... this will be for sale also...

Finally found some pictures on the Internet (same model and year but other maker). As I live close to Buenos Aires and the German military attaché at the German embassy there is a former Navy PA200 (Tornado) WSO I'm gonna ask him on which aircrafts this particular leather suit was in use.

I saw two of these for sale in recent years on eBay. I am pretty sure the final prices were well under EUR 200.

              Matthias,

Too much money for this type of suit. I have one date 1960 and I paid a lot less than 250 Euros for it. I have never been able to establish 100% who wore this suit but I do not beleive it was worn by fighter pilots. Concesus of my research so far is possibly helicopters and transport aircraft. This is far too bulky a suit to be worn in a fighter aircraft. The fur lining makes it very heavy and you wouldn't be able to move as quickly in this suit as a fighter pilot would have to. Besides, you would have to wear a g-suit under it and that would make it uncomfortable to wear. I'd be interested to hear what your contact has to say about the wear of this suit.

              Regards,

              Gordon

I haven't talked to the German WSO yet but have received information that this suit had been worn in the following German jet airplanes from 1956-1960:
                • Lockheed T-33A
                • Republic F-84F
                • Fouga CM.170R
                • Canadair CL-13A „Sabre"
                • Hawker/Armstrong Whitworth Mk.100/101 „Sea Hawk“
                • North American F-86K „Sabre“
                • Fiat G.91R/3 „Gina“

                  Matthias,

Interesting list of aircraft. Now, if we could only find a list of these flight suits in wear in a fighter we would have the icing on the cake.

                  Regards,

                  Gordon
