    Hi gents,

I was hoping to get some opinions on theis helmet. These are the only pics available. If authentic, what is the relative value?

Is it GSG9 or a Fallschirmjäger helm? The blueish color has me thinking it's an FJ helm rather than a GSG9.

      Please weigh in gents!

        Hello Mike !

Although not the big BGS / GSG specialist I`ll say that this is a real thing !

I had exactely the same type of helmet in my hands some months ago, told by its owner that it is of GSG origin. And I could resist buying it as it would open another field of interest ...

        Regards,

        Jens

I did find this one CLICK from Gordon's collection. The innenfutter is identical, although the chin cup is not present on mine and mine is clearly more blue in color.

I hope to hear some input soon!

The ones I had looked like Gordons one. BGS Green and not blue-gray.
Maybe a Luftwaffe FJ Helmet Copy? Maybe used by some Police Special Units?

Thanks for the input. I don't believe the helmet is a copy although I will defer to those more knowledgable. I'm leaning towards it being a 50's FJ helmet.

Mike - First and foremost, it's a sharp looking helmet no matter what it is.

I too am inclined to lean towards early 50's Fallschrimjaeger. I'm eager to hear what Gordon has to say, as I know a few of these have passed through his hands (with one or two actually residing in his world class collection).

In the mean time, I'm staying tuned to this channel!

                All the best - TJ

                  Thanks TJ!

I've been waiting with baited breath to hear what you and Gordon have to say! I'm hoping for the best on this one. It's in transit from Germany now. When I get it, I'll post better, more detailed photos.

                  Thanks again!

                    mbizy,

This is a Bundeswehr FJ helmet. Approximately 2500 of these helmets were produced during the period that the BW was trying to decide what helmet they would adopt for the FJ. These helmets are normally found with a smooth finish. I have one with a smooth finish and another one in a rough finish that has the blue over painted in an olive drab colour. Trial items are often painted blue. GSG9 helmets are virtually the same except they are BW brown in colour and usually marked BGS on the inside. They are rare to find on the market.
These helmets that are found with the chin strap removed are usually advertised as WWII FJ helmets because the chin strap on the post war helmets is different, although very similar, to the WWII ones. Hard to say what a good price would be. Especially without a chin strap because the chances of you funding a replacement strap are poor. If you look at this helmet you will find that the chin strap has been removed by cutting it off as it forms part of the liner.

                    Regards,

                    Gordon

Gordon, are you really shure that this was once a BW helmet ?? Beside the colour that looks very much like the "schwarzgrün" ("black-green") used by different BePo and the BGS the lining looks different to the helmets I saw ...:

(No, not mine - both are in someone elses collection...)

For me it look like a new type of liner in compare to these pictured ... and GSG9 used this type of helmets very much longer (until today??) then the BW...

                      Regards,

                      Jens

Those helmets are Bundeswehr prototypes - they were followed by a model which looks like a late war LW one.

The bolt pattern and type along with the shell shape and all liner charateristics are a perfect match to Gordon's as seen in the link I provided above . The only difference is that Gordons received the black-green paint scheme And was adopted into the GSG9 unit. Is that correct Gordon? Well, that and the chin strap difference you pointed out, although, as Patrick mentioned, the complete chin strap is present. It simply lacks a chin cup.

I appreciate the feedback so far. Please continue to help me understand what I've got here, if indeed anything needs to be added to Gordon's description.

                              Thanks fella's!
