    C. 1960 color photo of air crew in fatigue dress

Team – This picture arrived in the mail today. It captures a rather sleepy ground crew member snoozing on the wheel of a Dornier Do 27A. The Do 27A was a five-seat single engine Short Take-off or Landing (STOL) utility transport aircraft. It had a crew of one or two and could transport up to six passengers. I think of it as a post-war version of the famous “Storch” used by FDM Rommel in North Africa.

It’s hard to tell if this individual is assigned to the Heer or Luftwaffe. Of interest is the man’s crushed down denim cap, “sleeper” shirt and shoes. The shoes look almost like slippers, appropriate enough for this particular gentleman. Does anyone know if these are special ground crew shoes designed to prevent electro-static discharge during refueling, or, more mundanely, BW sports shoes worn while cleaning the interior of the aircraft?

In any event, I like this shot and hope you do as well.

Team - Here's a picture of a Do 27A taken by Jean-Patrick Donzey at the Deutsches Museum.

Interesting belt! I wonder what the heck that is. Perhaps a standard field belt worn back side out to prevent snagging on things?

The belt is not backside out, as far as I can see. Standard belt for the Grünzeug. The buckle is also green. Becomes brass when the colour is rubbed down.

HAHA!!! Well, that servers me right for looking at the photo without my reading glasses I did not see the right side of the buckle, only the bright edge of the left side. Now that I look at it I can see the whole buckle, therefore of course you are 100% correct. That's the standard 1960s field belt, used until the late 1980s.

So it's likely the trousers are 1st Model Moleskin, which puts the photo sometime after 1962.

I had some of them made in the early 90's. I think it's the HBT Uniform. Found some Trousers last week in storage.

              TJ,

The shoes are "BORDSHU". Special shoes worn by groundcrew so they would not damage the skin of an aircraft while they were servicing it. There were a couple of different models in different colours. I am a long way from my computer and files so can not say for sure which model but I beleive they were the early ones.

              Regards,

              Gordon

Gents - As a bookend to the sleepy flight crewman, I present this picture of a Do 27A pilot ready for take off.

I'm sorry that no date is readily available.
