THW grey pilot anorak, information please.
Hello,
my name is Keith and i have had this anorak in my collection for about 8 years and have never known what it was, i just knew it was a grey version of the early BGS sumpfmuster anorak!
The first time i have ever seen a photo of it was this morning when i saw the post by Hoover on the 03-31-2010 showing 3 parkas/anoraks used by the THW(?)
Could you please let me know who used it, German fire service (?) and when it was in service.
Thank you,
Keith

Keith23,
Hard to tell just what this Anorak looks like from the small pictures that you posted. I've enlarged them and perhaps that will help the other forum members with identification. This type of anorak was used by the THW (Technisches Hilfswerk), police and was very popular for civilian wear. Without markings or badges of some sort it will be difficult to assign it to any specific organization.

Gordon

Good news, that's a relief!
So the THW and police used them, that's interesting to hear. As far as i can see there's no sign of any insignia ever being added to the anorak so it may have been used by a civilian as you say.
I'd be interested to know when they were first issued and used up until as well, any ideas Gordon?
Many thanks for your help.
Keith

Hi Keith,
Very interesting item! This is nearly the identical cut of BGS 1st Model Sumpftarn pull over. Based on a conversation here the BGS model was used around 1957. The one you have isn't the same thing, obviously, but the similarity means it is probably from around the same time period.
It would appear Hoover posted a picture of THW (several posts ago) wearing the same item:
Squared off pockets, zipper down to belly, broad elastic gather at waist, attached hood, wrist adjustments, and the color all appear to be a perfect match. So if I had to guess, what you have is a THW (or perhaps ZB?) anorak. I don't know how rare these are or the timeframe.

To date it, one must consider colour also. It looks grey, so that would be 1960s, because earlier uniforms are tan (Like photo). But it does not look like ZB/THW dark grey. Is it possible some Bepo unito wore this? Later Bepo field uniforms are similar to BGS (in some Bundesländer), but light grey.

heh... to me the pictures look like the same tan (khaki) once you adjust for the quality of the picture/lighting. Just another reminder how difficult it is to look at pictures and know exactly what you're looking at
Keith, is your anorak more of a gray or more of a khaki color? It's quite important because one color or the other will drive the identification.
