Canteen/Messkit

Today I picked up a unissued canteen/messkit combo. I've always seen these in Green but this one is Fieldgray with gray straps and marked/dated PSI 88. Is there a reason for this.

Reason I ask this is I have no ideal about the West German equipment, just what I've seen in the past and never really bothered to pick up until now, so far I've gotten a few uniforms , gasmask canister, and this canteen. Thanks Guys.

Joe - Could be Technische Hilfswerke (THW), Katastrophen Schutz, or German Red Cross. Essentially these are disaster relief agencies that are issued various bits of military kit painted gray. There may be pictures of some of this kit toward the end of the "Bundeswehr Lovers Thread". Speaking of pictures, do you have any you could share?

Is it possible that that the "I" in PSI is actually a worn "L"?

PSL denotes kit manufactured by Paul Schulze, Lubeck. "88" denotes the year of manufacture.

Thanks TJ and yes it is an PSL I mistyped the I... Then I guess I'll still have to pick up a green colored one in the future.Currently I'm bouncing back and forth from East to West equipment.
