    Ralph, if you use google earth, you can zoom in on Flint/Junkerschule Tolz. The barracks were still there the last time I breezed through five years ago. It was converted into government offices.

    Thanks for bringing this back up, I forgot to post other bier steins! I'll get busy with the camera and be back later

        I'm still working on re-sizing using the WAF system, so I'll do one per post.

        First up is one from VBK 35 which was located in Paderborn in a Kaserne that dated from the Franco Prussian War 70-71. They had a cannon by the entrance gate from that war. I was with III Corps and was working with III Corps Forward for one of the REFORGER's. We fell under Army Group "NORD" as an asset. So we operated out of Sennelager for the exercise, but stayed in an old (Wehrmacht) Officers Club that belonged to VBK 35. We were right across the street from a BAOR Kaserne and when we didn't eat at Sennelager, then we used the British Mess. As we were getting ready to go back to Belgium, they held a dinner for us and presented us with the steins, full of course with the local brew: Warsteiner! We had been by the brewery that afternoon with a visit to the Hermann Denkmal which is/was their insignia. I'm always amazed that I was able to bring that one back in my duffel bag without it breaking.

          I'm getting better on the pictures
          You know the old saying about not being able to go home? Forget it!
          I was on my way to visit some friends in the Pfullendorf area from my first tour in Germany, so I decided to stop off and visit the General von Fritsch Kaserne. This was the home of the 2nd USAFAD when I was a young 2LT. I understand that for awhile in the 90's after the Det had been disolved, it was used by US Special Forces (what ever happened to Flint Kaserne?) Should have kept that one! I talked my way into the Kaserne to see if things had changed any. I found that they had torn down the US detachments building and paved over it, turning it into a parking lot. What is that Joanie Mitchell song?? Anyway, I went to the old Kanteen where we use to buy a schnitzel and bier for about 3 marks. I ordered the same (6 Teuro's then) and fell in with a group of artillerie Feldwebel. One remembered the US detachment and my coin was no longer good. By the time I left, I was packing a bier stein from the artillerie non commissioned officers verband. A nice sentiment on the bottom. The others that I have all have engraved tops reflecting service to the batterie. Hope you enjoy the stories. My sister in law has been after me to write this down for some time now!

              I received these as part of a "Konvolut" sale on eBay. Unfortunately, most of them were partially damaged in shipping due to mixing them in with things like helmets and metal gasmask containers Fortunately the damage was mostly minor chips, many of which I fixed.

                Here's one I got in Germany as a PFC. Our partenership unit was the 300th Spez Pioneers from Rhein Kaserne in Koblenz. Everytime we went to train with them they put us up at the dog school.

                As an aside, this was the only place I ever met a former German soldier that said he had fought against the Americans. Funny thing about that is when I worked in the DDR all the vets there only claimed to have fought against the western Allies.

                      Stein & cup Holloman AFB

                      Nice souvenirs to my 6-year-stay at Holloman AFB. I was one of the few German Navy guys working there. Sorry for the bad picture quality.

                        Forgot One!

                        It sits on my desk being very functional and thats probably why I forgot this one! Nothing real special but given to my crew by the Bundeswehr reservists that were on the exercise with us. End of exercise and were were their guests at the Warsteiner Brewery. It got a work out then! Funny how you forget things. When I cleaned it out for the shot, I found $20.00 in $2.00 bills. Wife was happy we went out for dinner

                                Great Pictures of the Junkerschule. Sad to see it in such dis-repair. What was the old Joni Mitchel song: "Take paradise and set up a parking lot" or in this case a Chinese Restaurant
