    british tunic question

Hi, at a flea market I was attending there was a table I saw that had what I believe to be a British tunic. The guy told me it was WW2 and wasn't sure if it was Canadian or British. I looked at it and I didn't see any date but the buttons had anchors with crowns on top and on the inside was the words, woods north south shields taylors outfitters, On the cuffs there is 4 gold cuff bands with a circle on the top one. It is a dark blue. He wants $50 for it. Is there any way of knowing if it is WW2 era? Does that price sound right? I took his name. Thanks, DEL

    Hi Del,

It sounds like a Fleet Air Arm tunic. If it is truly WWII vintage that is a deal, but there should be a tag on the indside of a pocket(internal) that will have a date. Without the tag and without pictures I can't help you more.

    Sorry
    Gary

Sounds like a standard Royal Navy Officers Tunic .Were the buttons brass and did they have a Kings crown or a queens crown. The Shiny RAF button has a post war crown and the dull brass RAF button has a ww2 type crown.Rob.

It could be that the buttons are the only way of dating the tunic - a cown with rouded, sloping shoulders would beturn of the last century until the 1950's, a crown with big rounded cushion sticking up would be 1950's onwards, the same crown but with a more angular shape would be Victorian. There are other crown / coronet designs on British insignia, but these 3 are the most likely. There will be examples of the different crowns in various thread in this forum.

Royal Navy tunics usually have a tag with name & date on the inside pocket.

            British tunic question

Thanks for your replies. As far as the buttons go, it was a queens crown with a cross on top. I am pretty sure the buttons are shiny. What about Woods North South Shields Tailors Outfitters that I saw on the inside pocket? Does that have any significance as a WW2 manufacturer? I am not really interested in purchasing it for myself, I am just curious as to if it was a WW2 piece. If it is not WW2 than $50 would be too high, I guess? Thanks, DEL

Hi, when I go back this weekend, if the tunic is still there, if any of you guys are interested I will gladly purchase it for you. If anyone is, let me know. DEL
