    Old British powder keg

Anyone here know anything about powder kegs . I got this recently it appears very old 1749 or 1849. Anyone know any books on the subject ? Its about 6.5 inches in length and 6 inches wide thanks Rob

Blimey, not something one expects to see hereabouts! The construction is good for a 17th century keg I think but the short shorn head of the man on the end looks a good deal later than that. Nice item.

          Why British ?
And why do you think it was for gunpowder?
I have a similar “powder keg “ with broad arrow marks which had rattan bands not iron
          Much safer
          It could be for water

One very similar to that on the net, four band not two, no handle fitted but has the holes for one. looks incredibly similar in design. Written up as French Napolionic. Even painted in French colours. (sus that's not original but the cask design looks good)

Not carved on the ends, however, the bands are also iron. worth a nosey on an image search.

Never know, you might have a bit of French kit nicked by the brits

                  Regards

                    The arms Are not British
three lion rampant with a crown above the top lion

And the crown is not British in design

I think Royal Bulgarian arms are the closest fit. The do show three lions rampant and the crown is a similar type. Certainly not British, but there may be other European states that might be possibilities.
