New knife laws

From the consultation and the announcement today by the Home Office it looks very much like, unless defences for historical items are included, as if ownership of any WW2 era Knuckle Knives such as the Middle East Commando Knife or BC41 will become totally illegal.

Just having one in your home will be an offence!

laws also applies to ordering knives online(uk). you will not be able to get it delivered to your home, instead will have to pick it up at a local store, to prove your over 18.

no idea it will apply to historical edged weapons from online dealers.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they became totally illegal.
Just look at these recent comments regarding online sales of militaria (Third Reich era in particular)...

“A cursory glance at something like Facebook Marketplace shows you how easy it is to still find these things”

“In the last five or six months, we've seen moves in the right direction by companies like Facebook when it comes to hate content on their platform and things like this being sold, but I think there's a long way to go."

“But two Nazi military badges were allowed to remain on sale despite being reported by a Facebook user in October last year. A cursory glance at something like Facebook Marketplace shows you how easy it is to still find these things”.

eBay-“These items have no place on our marketplace. EBay goes beyond legal requirements to remove items that may be disrespectful to the families of those affected by the atrocities committed during the war”

Although it is acknowledged by them that there are legitimate reasons for owning militaria like this, it seems they are only focusing on the negatives and trying hard to ultimately stop it all together.

Currently illegal to carry in Canada:
• automatic knives such as switchblades;
• centrifugal knives such as flick knives or butterfly knives;
• gravity knives;
• finger rings with blades or other sharp objects projecting from the surface;
• Constant Companion (belt-buckle knife);
• push daggers;
• devices shorter than 30 cm concealing a knife blade (e.g. knife-comb);and
• brass knuckles.

Our law focuses on intent, however. If I have a 6" knife in my hunting gear or a utiltiy knife [aka 'box cutter'] in my tool box, no issue. If I get stopped after dark in an alley by a Po and have either, I may have 'some spainin' to do'.

Not sure how musuems deal with it but strongly suspect there is an exemption for them. Private collections probably not an issue if kept private.

Actually under the current laws it is illegal to sell gravity knives, and knuckle knives (unless 100 years old) but that has not stopped it happening.

Add to this the fairly recent decision by Canada Border Services Agency to prohibit the importation of assisted opening knives. The laws haven't changed but their interpretation has. They are still legal to own but can no longer be imported. Frustrates me when bureaucrats twist the laws to fit their own agenda.
