Metal pips on Denisons question..

Can someone tell me if it was common/uncommon practise to wear metal rank pips on Denison smocks during WWII.

Nope, it wasn't that unusual especially for Senior NCOs who like to looked smart, although cloth pips are much more commonly encountered in wartime pictures and on actual examples.

Hi Steve, the wearing of metal pips on Denisons was not unknown but was fairly rare. The vast majority of officers wore cloth.

I meant Officers, it was a typing error. Senior NCOs never wore pips as you and I both know.

Here is a photo of a 1945 dated 2nd pattern Denison Smock with pips for Captain. These had been there since the war and were NOT (to the best of my opinion) added recently.

According to Brian L. Davis it was not uncommon for an officer to wear metal pips of his previous unit for old times sake.

Quite unofficial, but it adds a personal touch to your uniform.

It might have been! Looks like a smock to me!

Sorry, here is the right one! I think! Underneath the pips the shoulder strap was near mint condition leaving a noticeable mark.

The reason I asked is my 1st pattern smock has holes a half inch in from the shoulder on each tab. I guess that makes it a 1st Lieutenant or Major, yes ?
