    The Devil, You Say!!!

As if any proof was required as to who the REAL Evil twin is... I post this for His Evilness, picked up earlier today on our road trip through Noo Hampsha.

WHAT in God's name IS this?????????? About 48mm wide and 40mm high.

Neither of us can remember enough from the LATIN Mass to even GUESS what the BLACK Mass version means here.

I mean, some of those "Public Schools"...

      Rick,

This is the cap badge of the Winnipeg Rifles aka "The Black Devils".

This appears to be a WWI badge from the 8th Canadian Infantry Battalion, CEF. (there are quite a few different varieties/variants of this "type" of badge.

Although not marked, these blackened brass varieties were apparently made by Birks.

      Cheers,

      Adam

Hmmm.... must've been a helluva job being Battalion Chaplain to the Devils!!!

Is this a "good" badge, Canadian collecting wise? I was drawn (after my TRUE Evil Twin's eyes went all phosphorescent and he began pointing and chanting "Zoul! Zoul! at it ) to it by the quite peculiar imagery (would have been interesting if they were brigaded with the "daisies" of Princess Pat's! ) .

Am I even close in Mass-Latin to the motto being something like "Recognize Your Enemy's Name?"

What is such a demonic dingus (I hate these questions, and only appalling ignorance is my feeble excuse ) "worth?"

Its the John Wayne Bobbit badge.

The motto is actually "Can you sew this back on"

It was given to the hospital staff that worked on him...

"So named (or praised) by the enemy"

..."The Little Black Devils". I guess "Nosco Hostium" would be "know thy enemy".

Petit Alta. Back to work. type type type...

The motto is something like "Named by the Enemy in Battle".

Dan is correct in so far as the motto goes.

The badge cataloges at $30 CAD according to the Charlton guide...but as the name suggests this is only a guide. It's a other ranks badge and as such fairly common.

                  Cheers,

                  Adam

"Named by the enemy". During the Riel Rebellion they got their name from rebel Metis. The Winnipeg Rifles, being a rifle reg't.,wore "black-green" uniforms and being a rifle reg't ( equivalent to a jaeger reg't.) they made life miserable for the enemy;therefore, the rebels called them the "Little Black Devils". During WWI they were one of 2(?) reg't that held the line during the first German gas attack. My grandfather was there and he said they surprised the Germans who were expecting a walk-over after the French and Algerian troops broke and ran through the Canadian lines.Surprise! He also said that had to take off their cap badges when on leave because the "working girls" were good Catholics and wanted nothing to do with men of the devil. That "Holier than thou attitude" is ironic and makes the whole situation quite mind boggling.
