The Royal Regiment of Canada Contingent - 75th

There will be a group of just under 60 Canadians who are leaving Portsmouth today and travelling to Dieppe for the 75th anniversary. This group is part of a project that myself and several others have been working on over the past 2 years. I invite you all to check out our webpage and Facebook page listed below.

We will be honouring the men from the Royal's who were killed in action by placing a photo on each of the grave stones so that all will be able to see the soldier.

In addition to the family members of the Royal's, we also have several other individuals who are representing their relatives from the various other Canadian regiments.

Yesterday we were at the Brookwood Cemetery recognizing the men who were never recovered or who were wounded and later died of their wounds over in England.

I will personally be honouring my grandfather Pte. Harvey Seaton, a Bren light machine gunner who landed on Blue Beach as a member of C Company, 14 Platoon. For his actions he was awarded the French Croix de Guerre with silver star and mentioned in dispatch. He was one of the few Royal's who crossed the beach to the sea wall, took up a firing position and also managed to be evacuated off the beach that day.

If there are any others who are getting together to share a pint and some stories I'd be interested in knowing the plans. We are part of a group so it may take a bit of work to coordinate a time but I'd be willing to make an attempt. We will be in Dieppe till the morning of Sunday August 20th.

Martin, I will send you an email now. would be glad to grab a pint tomorrow night.

Mark, outstanding work with the pictures. I am impressed that you were able to track them down. It was very much appreciated! It would be great to have this done for all regiments. It does change things once a face is placed on a name.

I stopped there yesterday on my way back home from a holiday in Normandy. I was there arround 11:00 and the exhibition room was getting crowded with people including veterans and their families. Not the best circumstances for a collector like myself to view the exellent collection. But I enjoyed it and offcourse there should be time for the veterans and their families. Just wished I knew it would be so busy at that moment Then I would have tried to be there on another time.

And I must say, wonderfully displayed and nice items in the exhibition.

That's great!...I think that the 19th morning ferry from New Haven will be quite full!
2 days is enough especially the 19th & 20th which are the days of official Canadian & British commemorations although many other ancillary events as exhibit, reconstitutions, parades and even gigs & "beach choreography" (designed by a Canadian street choreograph from Quebec) will take place over a fortnight.

                  So, see you soon!

Nice meeting you again Thierry, albeit briefly !
