Can anyone identify this projectile? It is about 9 1/4" high x 3 3/8" in diameter. It weighs about 20 lbs. The base has a large threaded hole in it. There is a marking stamped on the side, but it is hard to read. I believe it says: "103" and a date "5/?3", and then "DKRF5484" and "BM145". After attempting to do some research on the internet, I found a picture of a British 3 inch naval shell that looked similar, but I'm still not completely sure. Can anyone tell me exactly what kind of shell do I have here, what the threaded hole in the base was for, and when this shell may date from (since I cannot clearly read the stamped date)? Any help is appreciated!

Hmm looks like a pre-Dreadnough pre QF type shell.
The size 85.725 is not a modern UK or any other navy size 90, 88, 76.2, 75 being the the modern (this century ones)
Perhaps a 20lb parrott gun??
have a gander at this site
