Does anyone recognize the campaign medals?

    Hi,

I recently found this photo at a flea market. The photograph appears to be from around the turn of the century. Can anyone make out what unit these soldiers are in?

    Thanks,
    Ted

      The Corps of Royal Engineers.

Second from the left, back row: first medal probably an Afghan War medal - red and gren stripes - and another possibly Egypt. Engineers [and Gunners] got around, so more likely to have diparate groups of campaigns than an infantryman.

If you have the original photograph you may be able to read what Cypher is in the centre of the cap badges. Also the chap on the far right has a number of badges on his left sleeve that may give more information on the exact unit.

Thanks for the replies! I can't make out the cyphers on any of the badges. I will try to find a better magnifying glass.

            Thanks,
            Ted

I have no idea what they are, but the arm badges on the chap on the right are interesting and, I think, unusual. The shield shape with the St george's cross on it, for exampl, is not one I recognize. Mark?

The others are odd shapes as well, for standard British wear, in my very limited opinion.

Looks like a beaver in lieu of a cypher so possibly Canadian Engineers. Supporting this is the use of 7-button frocks. Some obviously are former British Army as there weren't a lot of medals for Canadians back then.

You could be right there, so what is the time period for the little critter? There are badges with a Cypher and lower scroll, so I suppose the circlet with Canadian Engineers and Beaver pre date those.

Between 1907 (issue of forage caps) and 1914.

Never thought of Canadian, due to the medals, i guess. Well spotted, sir.
