Need help with insignia identification please

Can anyone ID these insignia? Do they have anything to do with South African forces? My great grandmother's brother was Emil Hettich. He was in the Schutztruppe in fatwa and later became a South African National in Johannesburg where he died.... I'm curious why these items were together in an auction lot. I would find it unlikely, but could Emil have served Germany in WWI and the Commonwealth in WWII? I know it happened in the US.
