Hi
I wonder if any of you can help me. I've picked up a small leather case that contains an assortment of small tools. Initially I thought they were for maintenance and repair of the mechanism of a gun, but the size is so small, it would be ridiculously difficult in battlefield conditions. I think that the tools are for repairing clocks or watches. What is strange is that the leather is stamped with the War Department wide arrow and 71. The maker's details are also stamped FAIRBANKS LAVENDER & SON and dated 1915. So official issue and not a private purchase piece.
Does anyone have some knowledge or thoughts on the item. I have photographed it next to £1 coin, similar in size to a US quarter.
Thanks and kind regards
John
