British naval Sword 19th century help needed.

Hi all, I know little about this item and am showing it for a friend, all i can figure is, is that it is British and naval from the 19th century, any info would be greatly appeciated,

Is there a number on the back of the blade near the hilt ?

Thanks for that info Richie , it has a number and looking it up on the site it is 1879 with quantity for year of 566,
any ideas on meaning of gold highlight, rank of officer, value of item?
