        The bayonet is an Aussie, L1A2, ("long" blade).

          I may be imagining things but I think I see '1955' on the top line. To me, that would make sense, as the whitened web - either made that way or well blancoed before the stamps went - is pretty typical of the '50s and '60s when armies were trying to 'look good' on shoestring budgets. Some of us recall the horrors of white vinyl belts and this looks like a similar attempt to evoke the look of 19th century 'dress' equipment. Interesting piece!

              The Navy always did have style!

              My favourite story of that is when they took Churchill on a tour of Scapa Flow and one of the destroyers dropped a depth charge as a demo. A few minutes later a wooden door labelled 'W.C.' floated to the surface. Chruchill's respnse: 'The Navy always did do a fine compliment.' Or so the story goes.
