    RFC Pilot Brevet

I have no experience regarding the RFC Pilot Brevet (also Observer Brevet) - your expertise and info (including website links) would be appreciated.

What are your thoughts about this Pilot Brevet
    - seller states "wing for patrol jacket, measuring 115mm in width, with minor residue from previous mounting"
    - it appears, to me, to have never been tunic/jacket attached
    - condition looks extremely good (too good???) for a 100 year old cloth item - is this a period WW1 wing?

    Thanks, Ian

I'm certainly no expert, but the padded, hessian-like backing is identical to several definite copy wings I've encountered.

      Thanks Mike

The brevet that I originally posted also does not have a brown/khaki coloured laurel wreath.

      Cheers, Ian

Internet search: Australian War Memorial site: "Pilot's brevet: Second Lieutenant John Hay, 40 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps" https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/REL34597.001/

description: "Royal Flying Corps embroidered pilot's qualification brevet. The brevet has cream cotton embroidered wings, a King's crown, and the letters 'RFC' within a khaki embroidered laurel wreath, on a dark blue wool ground"

Be very wary of wire embroidered Commonwealth insignia. I would pass on this wing unless it was at a giveaway price.

Hello Ian, the bullion brevet is a modern copy.

The crown isn't even close to that on the original and bullion was not used in service insignia, except perhaps for mess dress!
