His War Substantive Rank was SSgt, but he retained Paid Acting Rank of WO1 when he was Taken on Strength.
In other words, he was a SSgt with Acting Rank of WO1 - probably because they were short of someone in that rank and he was 'acting up' and being paid. This prob explains why he was Sub Conductor and not Conductor.
To gain Substantive rank from Acting Rank you normally have to have served the minimum time in rank, plus have completed promotion and trade related course.
If he had a pension it would have been based on his sub rank of SSgt.
