His War Substantive Rank was SSgt, but he retained Paid Acting Rank of WO1 when he was Taken on Strength.

In other words, he was a SSgt with Acting Rank of WO1 - probably because they were short of someone in that rank and he was 'acting up' and being paid. This prob explains why he was Sub Conductor and not Conductor.

To gain Substantive rank from Acting Rank you normally have to have served the minimum time in rank, plus have completed promotion and trade related course.

If he had a pension it would have been based on his sub rank of SSgt.

No problem - as I said, my grandfather was a wartime RAOC WO1 Cdr with a very similar discharge book (also discharged 1946 to Class Z Res) which I have studied at length. I am also a former WO myself so these records - although well before my service, are still familiar enough to be able to understand the Army abbreviations and way of speaking.

It would have saved a bit of time if you had posted the last documents first.

Lets just say he acquired it during his service time. (pun intended )

                The old joke

                "The ARMY"

                The only place you:

Drive with your lights on during the day.
                Off during the night.
And have your watch taken away when you retire
