    Order of the Garter Lighter?

    Hello All,

First of all, happy New Year to everyone!

I came across the lighter and thought I recognized the symbol for the Order of the Garter. It seems to match up, though I have two concerns: 1) the buckle is normally on the other side, and 2) I cannot find any recipients with the initials "NF" or "FN".

Anyone have thoughts as to the Garter connection and who the recipient may be?

    Cheers,

    Brandon

Possibly a Scottish clan connection and not Order of the Garter

Agreed, the garter was a fairly common device on clan badges and even coats of arms - not all are dsiplayed on a shiled but may be enclosed in a lozenge or oval. So, a heraldic device but not tied solely to the Order.

Definitely not the Order of the Garter.

The belt is quite a common device used on British and European engraved plate to "frame" the initials or image.

If it were the Order of the Garter it would have the motto Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense.

The Crown may be a clue. It is silmilar to the coronet used in British heraldry by Dukes and Earls, also like that used by some European royalty, such as the Belgians.
