CDN MP wants to prohibit selling medals

    The link to the story

With the recent VC case in Canada, an MP wants to prohibit the sale of ALL Canadian war medals.

    Thoughts?

I'm not sure how to feel. I was against the VC being and I am glad that we were able to retain it. On the other hand if I support this then I am really a hypocrite for collecting the medals that I do.

Rock and a hard place eh?

IMHO these vets fought for our rights including those of ownership of private property, where I feel this falls into. If a family does not want to keep the medals or has no interest in them; legislation will not force them to change their mind and hold the awards in higher regard.

I understand the sentiment, but the vets speaking out should not be speaking to me, you, or even the government but to their OWN families and saying what they want done with their awards once they pass on. It is sad that these awards do get sold, but WE the buyers at least will show an interest in the awards and what they stand for, not curse the government that we cant sell them and throw them in box in the basement or worse the trash!!! I will leave the museum option out as I am affraid that there are already thousands of the more common awards in their possession that will never again see the light of day, or they already have sold them.

Or upon death the medals are to be returned for recycling

Politicians think up almost anything to get their names in the papers.
Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

Oh Christ, I hope the tossers in Westminster don't get a whiff of this. They've just about pissed everyone else off: shooters, hunters etc. Talk about putting ideas in to peoples' heads. Some upstart politico could use this to build up his portfolio and then my head really would explode! I mean, really. It's not like there's a lack of more pressing issues that need addressing is it? In any case, it's us collectors that keep their memories (of the medals' original recipients) alive. A damn site more worthy than these bastards that want to undo everything - fine old regiments included. What a knob.

knowing the gov., they will just find a way to tax the sales. that will make it a-ok.
