I've done a quick search and found 6 other sets of QSA plus KSA to the 2nd battalion Berks. All have the same clasps [bars] as yr Gr grandfers: CC, OFS and Transvaal, plus the King's South Africa with the 2 clasps. so all were there for at least three years [1899-1902] Their serial numbers are all in the range 4900-6000, so they would have been, I assume, later recruits than he was. The 2nd Battalion was IN South Africa when the war broke out and saw some hard service in the western Transvaal but not at any of the battles which earned extra bars. So, he was not a war time enlistment for SA but a regular. for whom the standard period of servce was six years minimum. The battalion was in ireland from 1885-1892, to England in 1893 and out to cape Colony in 1887, so he likely enlisted while they were in England. here's a potted history of their SA service: http://www.angloboerwar.com/unit-inf...shire-regiment
