    Westminster Dragoons ID tag

    Hello,

I picked this ID tag up yesterday (1 of 3 different variations) and have just done a CWGC check on it. It seems the poor bugger was killed in 1915 and his parents were living where I grew up. http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/cas...asualty=113273

As I've never seen a tag like this one before, I wouldn't mind hearing your comments on it.

That is a rare tag indeed...........why did you leave the medals behind? Sorry thats a long running joke I have with many medal dealers.

Napier served with 2nd County of London Yeomanry and died at Gallipoli. When men are listed as died it normally means of disease. Very poor conditions at Gallipoli......I wouldnt of wanted a drink from some of the wells drilled by the R.E.

He was born in Holborn and Enlisted at Bread Street Hill EC.

Only 35 men of this unit are recorded as causalities during WW1.

The tag was probably sent back to his familly with his personal belongings, very sad really.

    Steve.

      Hello Steve,

I'm so pleased I bought it, I wasn't going to in the first place but then I thought, oh sod it, it's Christmas.

So not only did I grow up down the road from where his parents lived, I also own a rare tag. Great stuff.

I'll attach the pics of the other 2 tags I bought too.

The first one is 1301 L.C.F. Cooper of the 10 RB. Rifle Brigade probably.

The 2nd are a pair to 5227 J. Bain 10 RH. One of them is the fibre type and the other is a very worn Arabic coin with his details and Solonica engraved on it.

So Steve, I should have taken the medals should I? I wished they were there but instead I’ll have to dredge ebay hoping they turn up and that no one else sees them.

Cooper was a Rifle Brigade he made it to the rank of corporal.

Bain was in the Royal Highlanders he had an S/ prefix infront of his number which is not recorded on the tag.

I have a few WW1 ID tags in my collection.....some that would your eyes pop out of your head.....interesting stuff but when dealers are wanting £7 and over for these I draw the line because I can buy a named WW1 medal for that.

            Steve.

              Hello Steve,

I find the tags more interesting than the medals sometimes and so am prepared to pay more. In London they cost a lot more than £7 too.

Which book do you use to find these things out? I've not found anything on Raymond Savage yet (the Artists greatcoat).

Why don't you scan some of your tags, I'd be very interested in seeing them.

                Consider this:

A WW1 victory medal for £7 or a ID tag for £7? As a medal collector there is no contest. But each to their own.....its what you want to collect and in my opinion WW1 medals are still cheap considering how these men had to suffer.

Will post one of my tags later on tonight.........will a Royal Flying Corps all silver MID twice and MSM do?

                Steve.

                  Yes please post a pic.

I'll tell you what Steve, I'll give £7.50 for it if it comes up for sale.

Really, if you do ever sell it please think of me.

My mistake its an RAF one.......but this man was RFC entitled to all those awards and best of all a man who did live not far from my own home.

Ive got several others hanging around too. One that looks a lot like your Rifle Brigade one to Company Quarter Master Sergeant of my local chums Battalion regimental number 50 something another to a private of my local TA Battalion number 30 something......chindits tags from the second war etc etc

But I must warn you I have seen some fishy examples floating round to RFC and RAF officers........some of them look like they were made yesterday.

Maybe would could come to an arrangement Tony, medals for ID tags? Maybe these items or more emotive to some people because you know that a member of the forces always carried his ID into action?

I wonder how many of these they must find in the "Iron Harvest" in France?

                    Steve.

                      Steve,

                      The tag is great.

I walk across the fields in France as often as I can just looking at what is lying on the surface. I have found many things, mainly live but have never found anything personal.

If I find someone who'll sell me Great War medals for 7 quid I'll swap as many as you like. As I live in Germany I am for ever surrounded by tons iron crosses so love it when I back in England and can find British stuff. I'm back to Germany tomorrow, bummer.

10 RH is the 10th Hussars, never heard about Royal Highlanders in that era.
That's the new Regiment they want to create from the Black Watch and others

I would also like to add that the 10th Royal Scots were a cyclist battalion which makes that another rare tag. They were a territorial unit from Linlithgow.

                            Well done on that find!

                            Steve.
