heres something VERY intresting i just found out! i ask my dad HONESTLY to tell me where he got and it turns out he was down in one of his patients houses(hes a doctor of over 30 years) and the patient said he could have it for his boat, the patient lived down in portmarnick near the beach and during the war a brit bomber(he say lancaster) broke up while crashing out at sea and that the compass was found in the sand dunes by the patients father a few months later! it would explain why all the green corrision on the compass itself! very intresting! and i thought he was lying all these years!!!

                        Compass

P10 compasses were used on British WW2 heavy bombers, so, a P11 I would assume was the next mark up, or varient .. so it looks very much like an aircraft model.

There's a picture of a P10 on this website for comparison..

                        http://home.hetnet.nl/~nuilre/airforcemisc.html

Although this P10 is not held in a cradle like your example.

                        Regards

                        Gary J.

thanks gary! it realy is amazing what you can find out in a night with a few hours of research! i found out that the same patient guy was in the airforce post war and for some strange reason is related to adam claton from u2!!!! he also did work on my dads boat to thats why he gave the compass to my dad! i think i might do abit of research and find out how many british lanc bombers crashed in that area over the course of the war and maybe i can find a aircraft it came from! portmarnick is a bit out of the way so there cant be that many i shouldnt thing!! thanks guys!

I remember I was in a bookshop in Kilkenny of all places and there was a book in there that detailed every single German bomber that crashed or was interned in Ireland. I cannot remember if there were any accounts of British planes that crashed there are listed in the book. It looked like a fairly recent publication but as my memory is about as useful as the pope's knackers I cannot remember the name or the author of the book.
