The most Faked British cap badge - The King's Colonial's

In my opinion this is the most faked British cap badge. I can remember when your average line regiment cap badge retailed at £3 - £4 pounds, a King's Colonial would cost you £45 +. A rather expensive badge.........reason enough to motivate the fakers.

This is an example from my own collection I purchased many years ago on the chance that it may be right. I paid £4 for it so no one has ever tried to make any money out of it.

My badge has a lot going for it but just isnt quite there at the post. What puts me off is the lack of detail on the maple leaf...you can see the detail is almost flat on the high points........that could be attributed to the striking or wear to the die. However upon close examination on other areas of the badge the detail is so very crisp.....e.g the hairs on the beavers back.

There is also a lovely bronze finish which is difficult to fake and the lugs that attach to the badge do not splay out but are instead straight.....very uncharacteristic for repros.

Looking for constructive critism of my badge.........would be even beter if someone has an orginal badge in their collection they could post a pic of.

Purchased this many years ago but have always had my doubts. Lugs on this North to south. Detail on leaf is greater but I assume yous is worn. If thats the case my opinion is that yours is original and mine not.I find I can only really tell from handleing the badges. The flash makes this badge look alot lightet than it is.

Many thanks for posting a pic of your badge. It does look very good. I wouldnt recommend it......but has it passed the bend test? My badge wont budge.

As you are probably aware there are some real nasty brassy repros out there. If this is a repro it certainly is a rather good one.

From time to time these badges do appear on DNW's online auction. They had an Australian badge not long ago, problem was some plonker had polished all the bronze finish away!

Interesting lug fixing........your lugs do appear to have a foot on them which I mentioned in my previous post.......this is the only real difference bar the obvious lug configuration.

You may be mistaken as the lack of detail on my badge is not due to wear as the reverse is also lacking in detail.

I collect any militaria I can get my hands on. However, my main interest is medals. From time to time I do like to start a badge thread.

I do rather like your cap badge some of the features are good but I can't really comment on much more because metal is not my main area, cloth is!

I'm lousy at making decisions on badges from photos but the second badge in 3 & 4 looks a bit sus to me - especially if the lugs are held on with silver solder? It's hard to tell if it's solder or verdigris.

I've only got two KEH badges, they're the the same badge design, the regimental pattern of 2 KEH, posted in a thread some months ago.

Here's my British American that I bought for £4 about 10 years ago. It passes the bend test which at the time was good enough for me.

The lugs have feet and are also fixed top and bottom as with Andy's badge, the maple leaf shows a bit more detail than Steve's but as it was only £4 I'm not so sure about it being good.

So hard to tell especially when I havent seen an example that anyone I know can confim is genuine.

Again the differences are exactly the same as the badge above.

Feet on your example......most interesting. I have seen a few canadian badges from WW1 with out feet which made me start to think perhaps my badge was manufactured in Canada. Just a wild guess!
