The Best Brodie in my Collection

This is a brodie from my own collection I purchased 6 years ago for 6 British Pounds. The helmet is complete with liner and retains at least 90% of the original enamel finish.

This particular helmet is very rare indeed. I know of no other example in any museum or private collection. If someone here does own one, please pipe up!

The helmet belonged to 14223 Private Charles Thorpe 1st Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. I know that Charles first entered into France on the 17/2/1915 as a reinforcement for the 1st Battalion.

The red X on the front refers to the 10th Regiment of Foot and the devil being the symbol of Lincoln (Lincolnshire).........The Imp. This device was worn on the helmets of the 1st Battalion throughout the war.

We know from regimental texts that the first issue of the Brodie was made in the Armentieres Sector during the last week of March 1916 to the 1st Battalion.

Please note the colours of in the photo are not exact.

    Steve.

    Steve,

Incredible piece you have there! Truly the best Brodie I've ever seen and probably will see forever!

Excellent! Thanks for sharing it with us

    Cheers, from Jack

Sorry I forgot to tell you all the shell stamp is KS 49. Which means nothing to me!

Liner has no visable markings other than the name of its former owner.

On my travels I have seen many painted examples......although the badge is rather crude it represents my county regiment, this why for me it is the best example I could ever hope to find.

          Jack,

I obtained this helmet from the same auction as the airborne camo. Perhaps Thorpe was the father of the Airborne vet?

Thats a nice helmet Brodie, can it be attributed to anyone?

I will try to get some shots of the liner on Tuesday.

          Steve.

That is a very nice helmet Steve and only for 6 quid and with that history behind it. You lucky bugger. My best Brodie is complete with the Brodie stamp in the liner but was used by the Americans (there's a 5 pointed red star on it) and my 2nd best Brodie (I only own two) is the rimless type. It has what I've been told is the flash for the AEF 1st Div. 1st Brigade 3rd Battn. New South Wales but the liner is missing.

I am after a cheap 100% British used helmet, I'll give you 100% profit on your helmet Steve; 12 British Pounds!!

            Brodie, check your PMs please.

            Tony

The 5-pointed red star is one of the Machine Gun Battalions of the US 26th "Yankee" division. I can't remember which one off the top of my head, but it's the 101st, 102nd or 103rd. It's one of the harder-to-come-by 26th Div. painted helmets.

All I'm aware of in the commonwealth was the Tanker's face mask.
