The number is probably an order/stock number, otherwise I can't help you. It would be good to see the cap if possible.

In the April, 1938 Army List, I found Maj. A.L. Pemberton, M.C., R.A., psc, as a GSO 2nd grade in the War Ofice.
The MC was of course, a WWI award.
This may well be your man, as I assume he would have been promoted at least once or twice in WWII

Thanks for that robert I think that May be but I don't see any medals of the tunic I have that came with the cap

A.L. Pemberton ended up as a Brigadier and wrote the important War Office study of the RA in WW II: The Development of Artillery Tactics and Equipment (HMSO: 1950).

Pemberton is not listed in my 1952 Army List, so I assume that he had retired postwar. Appears that he had a long and successful career.

Just off the top of my head, I would say that the Royal Artillery played an extremely vital role in both world wars, and that it's contnuing development in both equipment and techniques were of serious interest.
Many have said that the RA was the best combat branch of the British Army in WWII for example.
It was a long way from inadequate numbers of horse drawn artillery batteries in 1914, to massed artillery such as seen at El Alamein, Normandy, etc.

Bob is right. The Royal Artillery (RA) was (in my opinion and that of many others) the dominant combat arm of the British Army in World War II and the essential foundation (for better or worse) of Montgomery's doctrine as exemplified in North Africa, Italy and Northwest Europe.

Pemberton's book, as an official analysis of the role of the RA in World War II, offered exceptional and objective assessment. In my opinion, it is the essential basic reference for anyone writing on the role of artillery in British operations in World War II.
