Great War Cavalryman?

Hello Gents,

With the 100th Anniversary of World War I upon us, I have been taking steps to acquire a few pieces of memorabilia.

I had the opportunity to purchase the below photo at a very low price and since it seems to depict a Great War cavalryman, I went for it.

Could anyone verify if my hunch was correct, and if so, can you identify this soldier's regiment?

The number 14 is stamped on the armbands; I'm not sure what they signify.

His cap badge looks like the Royal Engineers to me, with signallers (blue/white) armbands. Obviously mounted though due to the spurs and bandoleer.

Hard to see the detail, but could be Queens Own Dorset Yeomanry; it's certainly very similar.

Good spot! I'd not heard of them, a better scan should clear this up.

At this point, I'm thinking Rpyal Engineers as well. I believe that in 1914, each cavalry brigade had a mounted signal troop attached to it.

Thank you very much for your assistance. Armed with your suggestions, I narrowed my focus on the two aforementioned organizations.

Under magnification, one can just make out the "GR" cypher, thus identifying this trooper as a Royal Engineer.
