    Webley Lanyards

Is there any difference between a WW2 made lanyard made for a Webley revolver and a post war made examples?

I'm trying to find a WW2 example and I've seen a few for sale. Some that are offered as WW2, others offer the same as post war.

Are there any tips to tell the difference?

    Thanks,
    Erich

Your request is rather broad.... there are many variations of lanyards and I think you will need to show a photo of the specific lanyard you are asking about in order for people to give you an opinion.

I understand exactly what you mean but cannot answer the question! I have also been looking for one and came across the same problem.

Here is the lanyard I'm talking about. I've seen these offered as both WW1 and WW2. I'm wondering if there were made the same into the post war years as I've seen other variations where the cord has a looser weave.

We are not talking about lanyards in general (as in ones worn at the shoulder), but pistol lanyards (as above) which are quite specific. I believe the one posted is modern.

Well...and this is only my opinion:

It is green, thick and looks very much like the ones that I have seen used in the British Army recently. I also think that the older ones were a sand colour and a bit thinner.

Thank you, those are the kind of observations that may help us weed out the newer from the older

                  Modern Lanyard, Individual Equipment Carrying

                  Lanyard, Pistol, Tri-Service

                  NSN 8465-99-961-9512

The older ones are more brownish/Khaki.
I think I have some left from a 1949 or 50 original Packet, so much closer to the wanted Period.

Many thanks for this info which confirms my thoughts. Do you have one going spare please!?

I understand we are talking about pistol lanyards but obviously there are variations or the OP wouldn't have needed to ask his question. I've seen pistol lanyards that are double corded like that shown above and I've also seen pistol lanyards that are single corded.... there are variations. For what it's worth, modern Canadian lanyards for the Browning Hi Power look just like the lanyard shown except they are much more green but the weave and knots are nearly identical.

Thanks everyone for your input. I guess the answer is to get a khaki variation and be satisfied with that unless you can get one straight from a WW2 vet.

Give me some Day's for this. I guess they're in the Tegel Storage what I want to visit next weekend, but I also look at the South Storage tomorrow. 4 or 5 must be left somewhere.

No sweat - I haven't even got my .455 yet!

I have seen some 'period' advertised lanyards which have a carbine clip which clips the lanyard to the ring below the pistol grip, but I still do not know if these are WW1-2 vintage or not. Unless sourced from a WW2 vet (as mentioned) we may have to rely on period photos.

Reference my last - I have now!

The lanyard came with it and was described as 'original', the seller stated that it came with the weaon when he bought it from world wide arms.

I have no reason to dispute it so please have a look. My example looks like the first one posted - now that I have it in hand I think that is is legit, having seen some definite post war ones in the meantime.

The lanyard is 34" when pulled taut in sections of 4", 14" and 14". The two knots both have hollow wooden dowel inside (I imagine modern ones would be plastic?). There are no markings at all, and it is made of natural fibre (ie not man made).

I hope that this info is of some use.
