        Des:
A very sad story, indeed, but how nice that it is preserved and Pte Claeys is still being remembered to this day!

Interesting that a boy from Chatham (Southwestern Ontario - about 2 hours west of Toronto) ended up in the Cape Breton Highlanders...

Thank you, I appreciated reading through the documents. It brings the young man back to us for a few minutes.

Thanks for the comments guys. Its weird but having those photos and documents makes me feel like I know him in a way. I think it will be quite powerful to visit his grave in italy. When I do so, I will update the thread.

                  Very nice thread

Incredible thread, would it be possible to obtain copies for the Cape Breton Regimental Museum. i am currently serving with the CBH and would like to ensure that this young soldiers memory is preserved there.

He trained in Ipperwash so the connection might be that

I think the pay document would be his 'field-pay' and not his regular pay. I memory serves me correctly a pvt pay was about $1.30~1.50
