Montgomery Period Photo and Signature

This awesome piece recently found its way into an antique shop here in South Africa
and I have been trying to find out a little more about it so if anyone can help with any info please would you contact me. I am sure there are some Monty collectors out there .

My other question is how do I value something like this ? If anyone could help please send me a PM.

It is dated 1906 and shows Montgomery as the Captain of St Paul's soccer team. It is signed Montgomery of Alamein Field Marshall. The photo is pasted to a cardboard frame and there is a tear on the left hand side of the cardboard luckily it hasn’t damaged the photo. The back of the cardboard has writing on it and it says Wain Wrights Football Cup Winners 1906. The size is 28 cm x 23 cm.

Looks like St.Pauls School London, you can see the badge on the shirts, thats the motto for the school
Monty went to school there before attending the Military College at Sandhurst
Was most likely a local football tornament they took part in

Nice item, I would like that if it was not too expensive

I have a feeling that the writing is contempory to the photo and was written in 1906, I dont think Monty wrote it

It could be that another member of the team in the photo met up with Monty post war and thats when he signed it ??

You never know, they may have served together

The person may have taken it back to South Afrika

Wainwrights may have been the name of the team at St.Pauls, there may have been other teams there as well

Go Province, you are right that is Percy Montgomery.

Update with a bit more info to the writing on the back. I contacted St Pauls school and this was their reply to the photo.

Dear Mr Winkler

Thank you very much for this very exciting email.

We do not have a copy of this photograph in the Archives so it is lovely to see a sight of it and to be aware that it exists.

I also wonder how it made its journey to South Africa, and am really pleased that it has been discovered.

Wainwright was the name of the House which Montgomery was in
