Just picked these up yesterday, the black one i think is some type of Welsh Hussar Lt Colonel? The red one i can find anything like it, it looks a bit older then the black one? No Names inside that i could find. Thanks for any help i can get.

The button on the red coat is Queen Victoria period 2nd Life Guards, the blue coat is unlikely to be Welch hussars as I don't think there ever was one of that name, the Royal Hussars (Prince of Wales's Own) is more likely, though the early type has X R H beneath the feathers for the 1oth Royal Hussars, whilst the modern Royal Hussars has just the feathers like this.

The red tunic is cut like an eighteenth century coat, so it should not have Victorian buttons on it, and the lace at the cuffs is not an original feature, I'm pretty sure. The collar doesn't match the cuffs and the broad lace up the front is all wrong too. I don't think the points on the cuff lace is correct for Guards either: should be paired for the 2nd, so either two or four stripes.
It may be old - the shots of the interior suggest mothing and wear but its in a pastiche , but I'd put my money on theatrical or a masquerade costume, not genuine military. Sorry!

The first tunic, or coat, looks like a theater or movie costume to me. It has nothing to do with the Life Guards.
The second tunic is late Victorian , for a lieut. colonel in the Royal Wiltshire Hussars, a yeomanry regiment. I'd say circa 1870-1880.
Regular hussar regiments had gold braid for officers, yeomanry had silver.

The scarlet coat/tunic looks like the style of the 18th century, and I believe the 2nd Life Guards were known as the Horse Grenadier Guards back then.
I really have no idea what the buttons worn then looked like.

Thank you all for the help on the two, they sure knew how to dress! The red coat has all the same buttons, the jackets collar is dark blue or black and the cuffs are black velvet. Ill tray and take some better pictures of it and the inside. Cant figure out why there are no buttons on the front? Maybe you guys are right and its theatrical?

One thing is certain; that's a fine hussar tunic, and an earlier version, when rank insignia were worn on the collar, not the shoulder.
The Royal Wiltshire Hussars were the senior yeomanry regiment.

If it is a period piece then a breast plate would be worn, therefore buttons would dig into the body and the gold lace ends at the base of the plate.Originally posted by NBolinger View Post
