The service number is an army number not an RCN number. It belongs to the block of numbers alloted to No 1 Company, 1 (Canadian) Division Signals.

The alpha prefix is in fact correct for an RCNR number. "A" indicates the first period of engagement (5 years). It is not a Canadian Army number in this instance, although the CA certainly did use alpha prefixes to denote the militia districts.
