Thomas returns to England and is shown at Woolwich from 25 June 1897 in hospital until 6 September 1897 when he is discharged at Woolwich as unfit for further service.

Below are the discharge papers and summary of service as well as his extensive medical reports declaring him unfit for service.

Thomas back in England after Discharge (1897 thru 1909)

After Thomas’s discharge, the next record of his family surfaces in the 1901 Census. His mother (still unmarried) is still living with several of her siblings:

As far as Thomas goes, he shows as living as a boarder at the Powell’s. The Census records for 1901 state:

1901 Census Huddersfield
Northgate

Hannier Powell, Head, age 49
Elizabeth Powell, Wife, age 50
George Powell, Son, age 14
Thos. C Kirk, age 28, married, boarder, labourer born Broughton, Manchester
Emily G Kirk, age 26, wife, boarder, rug weaver born Chester

Although Thomas and Emily are shown to be married they actually did not get married until 1906 just three years before Thomas’s death. Not sure why they were listed as married. Maybe that’s the only way they could “board” at the Powell’s?

The following is the official Marriage Index for 1906. GRO registered marriage Thomas Clewes Kirk SQ 1906 registration district Pontefract, West Yorkshire volume 9c page 187 probably to Emily G Smith.

You have to wonder if Emily knew about all old Thomas’s Medical “issues” from the past …

Finally Thomas died at a young age of 36. I don’t have details of from exactly what … but you would have to think it had something to do with his past indiscretions.

It appears Emily died only a couple of years later in 1911 aged 38. It would really be sad if it was due to the same ailments of Thomas.

The last item of interest was that Thomas’s mother was still alive in 1911. You have to wonder just how much she was aware of all that Thomas went through and if the reasons he and his wife died were known to her at the time …

The 1911 Census shows Jane Kirk still single with 1 daughter and 2 sons along with 1 Grandson and Boarder.

Finally, what all this was about ... his Ashanti 1895-96 Star.
First a little background on the medal itself.

Description:
Ashanti Star 1895-96. Issued unnamed. However, Colonel Adolphus James Price CMG, 2 West Yorkshire Regiment, had the Stars awarded to his Battalion engraved on the reverse at his own expenses. This is one of those.

The Medal takes the form of a four pointed star with a St Andrew's Cross between the arms.

Obverse:
In the centre is the imperial crown surrounded by a raised band which bears the word 'ASHANTI' above and the date '1896' below.

Reverse:
In raised lettering are the words 'FROM THE QUEEN' in the central circle.

Suspension Device and Ribbon:
The medal is fitted with a ring suspender from the top uppermost point of the star and has a piece of 31 mm yellow ribbon with two black stripes.

The Ashanti Star is reputed to have been designed by Princess Henry of Battenberg, whose husband died of fever during the campaign.
