The King's Regiment (Liverpool) - Badge Variations.

In 1881 The 8th Foot became The Liverpool Regiment (The King’s), & later that year The King’s ( Liverpool Regiment).

In 1920 the regiment was re-titled The King’s Regiment (Liverpool).

The regiment wore as a cap badge the White Horse of Hanover, which had been awarded as a badge in 1716 by King George I. Below the horse was a scroll THE "KINGS" in Roman lettering.

In 1926 or 1927 the design of the horse was changed slightly, & the lettering on this larger badge changed to KING’S in Old English.

A smaller, beret badge was introduced in the early 1950's, this was about the size of the earlier badge with Roman lettering, although of the later design.

On 1/9/58 The King’s Regiment (Liverpool) amalgamated with the Manchester Regiment to form The King’s Regiment (Manchester & Liverpool), & the new regiment adopted the badge of the Lancastrian Brigade of which it now formed part. Presumably the junior regiment took precedence over the senior in the sub-title as The King’s was the main part of the title

On 1/7/68 the new regiment was re-titled The King’s Regiment, & joined the newly formed King's Division, the Lancastrian Brigade being disbanded.
The new regiment adopted a badge which displayed elements of the badges of both parent regiments.

    Badges in my collection:

Left is the version with the name in Roman lettering, of white metal with gilding metal scroll. K&K 598 refers.

Second from left is the badge that replaced it, again of white metal with gilding metal scroll.

Kipling & King state that it was sealed on 20/1/27. K&K 1974 refers.

According to Gaylor it was worn from 1926. Gaylor page 30 refers.

It is possible that the badge was in use prior to being sealed.

Third from left is the beret badge, sealed 13/4/50. K&K 1975 refers.

Right is the silver & gold anodised version of the beret badge, sealed on 22/11/71. The entry for K&K 1975 refers.

The regiment had been amalgamated into The King’s Regiment (Manchester & Liverpool) on 1/9/58, & wore the Lancastrian Brigade cap badge from that year until 1968, so this beret badge was sealed 13 years after the regular battalion ceased to exist.

Presumably the Territorial Army element wore it.

Missing from my collection are the:

WWI Brass economy version of the badge with THE "KINGS"in Roman lettering.

    Gaylor page 135 refers.

The WWII plastic economy version of the badge with KING’S in Old English, 40,032 produced in light bronze colour after 28/10/43, all manufactured by "MP".

I can find no reference to an anodised version of the post 1920's badge being produced.

The anodised badge is still worn today by Liverpool UOTC.

Never thought of that - so there's the answer re the date of sealed pattern being about 13 yrs after the regiment amalgamated & addoted the totally different badge of the new regiment, ta.
