Lieutenant 9 August 1851

1. Passed an examination in Hindoostani 23 January 1851. Remanded to his regiment.

2. The authorised number of officers having been withdrawn from his corps for detached employment previously to his appointment, Ensign Murray is stated to have been slightly injured by a wound on service. Military letter from Bengal 28 June No.99 and G.O. 2 July 1851.

3. Leave from 10 September to 5 January 1852 to visit Hoshairpoor on private affairs (Charles married Eliza Coventry on 22 October 1851). Leave from 5 January to 20 November 1852 to Dhurrumsallah and Simla on S.C. (sick certificate).

The East India Company’s Army was wound up in 1858 and men were transferred to either the British Army or the Indian Army. No complete service record for Charles Murray has survived, mainly because service records were only compiled when an officer went on leave to England. Charles after his arrival in 1843 never returned to England so no service record was compiled.

Charles married twice whilst in the service, first to Eliza Coventry on 22 October 1851 with whom he had three children.

- Charles Coventry James Murray born August 1852
- Ada Eliza Murray born April 1854
- Florence Louisa Eliza Murray born August 1855.

Eliza died in 1869

A little background on his father James Murray who was instrumental in getting him into the Military at a young age in 1842.

James Murray (1779-1847)

- Captain 19 Native Infantry subsequently HEIC Recruiting Officer for the London District.
- Baptised St James Westminster 5 November 1779.
- Cadet 1798 arrived India 7 March 1800.
- Ensign 25 December 1799.
- Lt.29 May 1802.
- Captain 22 February 1811.
- Retired 7 October 1814.
- Died Quatre Bras near Dorchester 22 June 1847.

Son of James Murray and Ann (James said to have been a nephew of John, Duke of Athol, if so, he was the son of Major General James Murray of Rowan.

1. Married at Berhampore 6 February 1802 to Elizabeth daughter of Henry Wedderburn, died 10 September 1814.

2. Married at St Pancras, Middlesex 29 June 1818 to Elizabeth Ann Smyth daughter of Joseph Brewer Palmer Smyth of New Jersey and sister of Admiral William Henry Smyth RN (R.N.B.)

3. Married at St Pancras 12 June 1838 to Catherine Wood daughter of John Wood.

Services: Posted Lt. to 19 N.I. 15 April 1801 on furlough 18 February 1806-23 August 1808 and 1812 until retirement. No record of active service.

Superintendent for the London District of the recruiting staff of HEIC 1819 until his death.
