    Cloth Patch for Identification

This just in today...a triangular, tri-color, multi-piece (3) cloth (felt?) patch, measuring about 4 inches on each side. I have no idea as to what the affiliation, meaning or significance might be...but am hoping it is military and Canadian (Commonwealth, perhaps) or American....as opposed to a football or other sport patch!

Can anyone please help with identifying this patch, please?

    Thanks and regards,

    John

Not likely a Canadian military patch.

I was researching something else but if you search on google images for "5th royal horse artillery" the third pictures has much in common with your badge, maybe a new lead?

I'm unable to post a direct link.

Yes, indeed, Stefke...well done! The Special Observer Badge worn by Soldiers of the 5th Regiment Royal Horse Artillery (U.K.) who have passed STA Patrol Training is indeed similar. I will try and add that information below. This is a clue that perhaps my patch relates to another British regiment....which I hope that someone out there might recognize.

Special Observer Badge, worn by Soldiers who have passed STA Patrol Training

4/73 Battery is an elite unit formed in 1982 to provide commanders with crucial battlefield intelligence on enemy positions.[2]
Members of this battery are volunteers who have passed a 20 week Special Observer Patrols Course.[3]
Whilst most gunners wear a dark blue beret, since 2008 soldiers of 4/73 Battery have changed to a khaki beret to mark the close working relationship of the battery with the Honourable Artillery Company.
Soldiers within the battery that have passed the 20 week STA Patrol Training selection course also wear the Special Observers badge on their arm as displayed on the right.[4]

Your badge has absolutely nothing to do with any past or current Special Observers.

Also it is 5th Regiment Royal Artillery, no Horse.

Thanks, Marc. On checking the referenced Wikipedia site I see that although "The regiment was formed in 1939 as 5th Regiment Royal Horse Artillery....", the name was altered in a subsequent reorganisation with the "horse" being dropped.

Thanks, as well, for quite definitively clarifying that the badge which I posted "...has absolutely nothing to do with any past or current Special Observers." It had only been stated that the two badges share certain similarities.

Hopefully a fellow collector out there will recognize the badge which I posted and be able to provide some additional helpful feedback.

Possible that it may be South African.
