Sherwood foresters WWI battle patch

Hi

I am looking for information on so-called battle patches carried on uniforms and helmets during WWI. I think they were used to distinguise between different units in the field. Is this correct?

Does anyone know how the Sherwood Foresters battle patch looked like? Or where I can find information the different regiments battle patches?

Also did they change during the course of the war?

I need the information for a modeling project.

Any help will be very apriciated, since I really haven´t been abel to find much information on this subject.
