Can't tell from the screen, but my suspicion would be Army Service Corps, tho' you need a closer look.

No, I can't get it - it's the sort of thing that I spend hours over, with magnifyer, different angles etc. It's even beginning to take on the general shape of the Scots Guards to me - ASC, Royal Scots, Dorstes etc - a challenge. Good close up though - abit late at night when you're under pressure to get to bed 'cos people have to get up early etc. ...........it's even looking a bit like the Border Regt.

He's an ASC Driver - hence the reversed puttees, spurs & bandolier. He actually looks rather like me in one of my G&T moods!

I think that ASC is looking favourite, but I'd be filing him under "not known" for a while longer, dragging him out for scrutiny every now & then. Everything rests on the helmet badge, the rest is not at all conclusive. Am I imagining cloth strips or an insignia of some kind at the top of his left shoulder?
Don't suppose his name rank & regiment are written on the back of the photo?

Unfortunately there's nothing at all on the back of the photo. I've blown the shoulder and the cuff up like the helmet and the only other thing is the pale lanyard.

I'm wondering if it's possibly my Great uncle Chris. They were both pipe smokers and there is a similarity. He was in the Bechuanaland Police, The Royal Sussex Regt and the A.V.C. One of his MICs (of 3) shows him as transferring to the Army reserve in 1910, with his A.V.C. service from 23/10/14 to 28/10/15

I'm hoping to get to Kew later this month to have a look at his service record amongst a few other things.

The back of this one is marked 'Coronation Day 1911, Goromongi? Rhodesia.

If he's any of them he can only be the one on the right, QSA only at that time, or he took the photo. Sorry for the poor quality.

Hospital Blues ,

Hiya , yep , i know what you mean , i will sit for hours trying to I.D a photo /unit much to the amazment of my dear wife who can not understand my interest in " dead mens things " i have for many years belived that postcards showing units must be one of the most underated area of collecting , any way my first glance at the photo before reading the details my reaction was BORDER REGT .( SORRY !!! ) i understand the argument about his reversed putties etc , but would this not have been the same for all ` mule drivers ` in infantry regts , just a thought ... also just had another look the badge appears to have a spike to each corner .......wild guess but machine gun guards ??????? , regards ,Michael.

1st/14th Bn. post February 1916, he's wearing the inverted red triangle of 168th Bde, 56th Div.

It's always nice to have something like th cantle badge & signalers badge showing in these photos, adds a bit more interest.

Which type are the shoulder titles? 2 or 3 tier?

I have a Victory medal with a couple of documents & armistice period photos of the recipient & his bn. (1/14 Londons) on the road near Mons. With them came a set of buttons, "cap" badge & shoulder titles. The man concerned managed to serve in a couple of other units - the RFC & a couple of Scttish infantry regiments. not bad, as he did'nt join until about 1917 / 18.

I see what you mean, as in the bullets at the points of the star a five pointed star with no crown etc. Looks like a crown on the top of this one. There seems a lack of symmetry to a possible mix of saltire & star - like the HLI's badge. I'm a definite undecided on this.
