    Very definitely British. Looks like a pattern 188, a Mark I, 2nd type - 2 rivets and an oilc learance hole on the grip. Also, the 'broad arrow' mark between the fullers on the base of the blade is the sign for British Ordanance and found on just about all British military gear issued from the 1750s to at least 1950.

    For the Lee Metford and Short Magazine Lee Enfield, that early, and in good shape you should find a buyer, but some were selling in 2010 for $40US. Literally hundreds of thousands were made, some in India, so they are not very rare. This one was made in Sheffield, centre of the kife and sword trade in England, as the stamp indicates. If you figure out the name - "... ESEN" - of the maker, there are pretty good records for that kind of thing.

        Yep, 1888, Metford, condition looks good, as for value, depending on condition a very nice one can go for up to £110 or a bit more with original frog. They dont turn up as often these days, but i did buy one a while back in better condition than the one you posted for £77, so as usual with collecting , its how your luck is, Pete.

            Jaques,

            As other have told you it is a Pattern 1888 Mark I 2nd type. There were four versions of the P-1888. Yours is the most commonly found version. Yours was made by Sanderson in July 1897. The marks on the other side of the blade are
            X = bending test. It shows which way the blade was bent and that it passed the test

            middle mark = inspector's stamp

            arrow = government ownership
