Hi mate,
We were British at the time, before 1949. Only Newfoundlanders who served in the Canadian units got the CVSM with or without bar. Service in Newfoundland, even being a Newfoundlander in a Cdn unit counted as overseas service as well towards the bar. In lieu of that, as Newfoundlanders of the British Forces did not qualify for a CVSM a separate Newfoundland volunteer service medal was minted in the 80s in the UK, and is a much sought after Medal incidentally. It however has to be applied for, I think many have never been applied for actually.
