    Union Flag

    Hi Frank

Very interesting flag. Being machined, it could be as old as WW 1 period but I would personally say WW 2 period to the 1950's. I do not think they used the "8th Kings" designation after the 1950's.

As marked, I suspect the flag was used by
reenactors, as noted elsewhere online at...

Active service listed as 19 June 1685-1 July 1881

          Hi OFW!
Nice to hear from you again!

I'm more close to Ken... As Wiki wrote about the 8th king's: 'After 273 years of continuous existence, the regiment was amalgamated with the Manchesters in 1958'

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King's_Regiment_(Liverpool)

So, it could be also from the 50s...

          Thanks the same! Cheers!

            1881 & 1958 Regiment numbers/names ???

            fs:
Also noted online that regiment "numbers were officially
            abolished in 1881
            ", "...The regimental system introduced
in 1881 was to last for more than seventy years. When
new regiments were formed by amalgamation from 1958
onwards, the old regimental numbers were sometimes
reintroduced into their titles. Examples are the 3rd East
Anglian Regiment (15th/44 Foot), Worcestershire and
            Sherwood Foresters Regiment (29th/45th Foot)."
            8th
King's Regiment on your flag IMO is a pre-1881 title, but
the flag is 20th Century, & more likely used by reenactors.

I agree - as a re-enactor myself - I can't see any member of a British regiment writing on a Union flag. Probably a flogging offence!

              A few other points:
              - what would be the point of a regimental Union flag? Other than its colours, what flags would an infantry regiment carry? No pennons like cavalry and anything they did get issued for whatever reason should have a broad arrow stamp or some other official stamp on them.
              - the rings on the corners are odd. I would have expected a toggle and a loop.
              - "For King and Fatherland"? Sounds Hunnish to me!

              My tuppence worth
              Peter

The flag may be oldish - the bunting version is still not rare - but I thing it has been 'improved'

Must agree with Peter about the "Fatherland" bit. Britain has always been represented by a female image i.e. Britannia and the Victorian symbol of the mother lion with the Empire countries as her cubs.
