    WW2 Cannister for Identification

    Hopefully someone can help me by identifying the purpose of this metal cannister shown in the attached pictures. It is clearly marked as shown:

    GSW CANADA 1942 Mk II.

    It measures 17 x 10-3/4 x 5-1/2 inches; has a web carrying strap across the top and a metail retaining bar that locks into place on the upper inside portion of the cannister. The inside upper top has a felt-like pad to cushion whatever is stored inside it.

    I do know that "GSW" stands for General Steel Wares and that the company also produced, amongst other items, helmets.

    I am thinking that it would have been used to store and transport some kind of equipment. It has been suggested to me that it was possibly for a gun sighting instrument?
