I can confirm that mine has the same 7 inch in length join .
My zip is DOT brand with a 2 inch cammo cloth pull bar tacked at 1.25 inches.

I just re-looked at my smock and found the zip has been sewn in with the EXACT same thread as used in construction as smock it self .

Hi owen , there is too many coincidences on all these smocks which makes me believe they were factory done at some stage and I do believe in war time due to the stitching , materials used and how they were done but until a manufacture reg appears the doubters will disagree , as for the red cross ,many years ago i had a size seven 1st pat smock in so called printed version which was untouched and this had the red cross . I think a batch of them were issued or found as there were quite a few on the open market but all large sizes

Thanks for the photos, Andrew. Looks like the red X may a QM marker as others have suggested.

I have no doubt these conversions were officially sanctioned and undertaken at a factory facility. The big question is "when ? "

1st one is CWS, my one is Wareings ..........but BOTH are converted exactly the same way .......so NOT at manufacturer but quite possibly at Regt level.

Exceptionally well preserved, even with the full zipper it's one of the nicest I've seen of the hand-painted variety.
