HLI? button?

Hello

I have a button that a friends family found in a clearing of an estate.

I apologize for this scan but it was the outer part that concerns me.

I recognize this this as the highland light infantry but there are some differences that may not be seen in the scan.....mostly under the horn is "ASSAVE" as well as an elephant under the HLI emblem. I assume this to have something to do with the pre war era? Possibly India?

Any thoughts?

BTW: It must read ASSAYE.

Yes, it does read "assaye".

the reverse of the button looks of rather new construction, I'll post a picture when I get my camera.
