British Union Jack flag - help!

    I've come across a union jack flag marked;

    2
    STACK
    PWD

Other than looking old, would it be WW2 vintage?

I'll get photos up later today.

    Thanks again.

So it's not the Union Flag, flying on the Top Mast, but the Jack Flag, flying on the Bow Mast at the Front of the Ship.

            BTW: Your's is upside down.
            Flying the Flag

Flags may be flown on every day of the year. Government and local authority buildings in England, Scotland and Wales are encouraged to fly national flags every day of the year (the flying of flags at certain locations in Northern Ireland is constrained by The Flags Regulations [Northern Ireland] 2000 and Police Emblems and Flag Regulations [Northern Ireland] 2002).[2]
Flags are normally flown from sunrise to sunset but they may also be flown at night, when they should be illuminated.
No permission is needed to fly the national flags and they are excluded from most planning and advertising regulations (but flagpoles may not be).
National flags should never be flown in a worn or damaged condition, or when soiled. To do so is to show disrespect for the nations they represent.
Important: the Union Flag has a correct way up - in the half of the flag nearest the flagpole, the wider diagonal white stripe must be above the red diagonal stripe, as Scotland’s St Andrew’s Cross takes precedence over Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Cross. It is most improper to fly the flag upside down.
If a purely decorative effect is desired it is better to confine the display to flags of lesser status; for example, house flags, pennants or coloured bunting.

The "2" might be the Size as there are different ones like for nice Weather or Storm Flags.
PWD ? maybe Property of War Department?

                Hello robs:
Appears WW2 vintage to me, by use of the woven
rows in the white material as seen in post #3 photo.

(below) WW1 USN ships turned over to UK c.WW2. & reflagged
with UK made Union Jack's with woven rows within material parts.

Jack photo from 1940 Destroyer for Bases Agreement, where 50
destroyers were transferred to the Royal Navy & Canadian Navy
in exchange for basing rights in the Caribbean. Churchill also
granted the US base rights in Bermuda & Newfoundland.

The proper name of the the flag is 'The Royal Union Flag' but that I think has now been changed not to just 'The National Flag'

Another quick bit of trivia for you

One day a year besides being the UK National Flag it is also the 'National Flag' of Canada. That is 'Statute of Windsor day' Dec 11th.

As well it is flown on 'Comonwealth-Day' by all Commonwealth nations (second Monday of March) and on the Sovereign's Official Birthday.

This one does look WWII vintage what do the lanyard look like?
