The die stamped version of these turned up a while ago in a thread (can't find the thread). I chipped in that I had these 2, but did'nt have photos to hand. They're obviously workshop jobs, I wondered if they were made as part of the qualification to wear the badge, in much the same way as the old propellor badges of RASC waterborne?

What you have here are 'appos' Wheels' - or RAF Apprentice insignia. They were worn right up until recently (?) when the RAF Apprentice scheme was (stupidly) scrapped. The Apprentice scheme was started by Lord Trenchard as a means of supplying the RAF with skilled craftsmen, and were referred to as 'brats' or (in my time at RAF Halton & St. Athan) 'appos'. The various RAF Schools of Technical Training were: 1 S of TT - RAF Halton; 2 S of TT - RAF Cosford; 3 & 4 - Locking & St. Athan respectively. The 'wheels' were stitched on to the SD by looped thread, although later staybrite versions used eyelets.
